Returning for her ten-year reunion, Abbie Bagley-Young kindly volunteered to share her passion for the visual arts with Shawnigan students. Graduating from Princeton with an Art History and Studio Art degree, she found a perfect match for her interest in science and art in the field of art conservation and restoration. From Princeton, she enrolled for three years in the Courtauld Institute in London, England to study the Conservation of Easel Paintings. She currently lives in Amsterdam, where she specializes in restoring 15th and 16th-century Dutch paintings. She works as a freelance restorer at the Frans Hals Museum and for the Dutch government art collection. She has recently begun a PhD program at the Rijksmuseum.
While at Shawnigan, she was able to share some of the techniques and skills needed to restore paintings. As well, she demonstrated traditional egg tempera painting, from the grinding of the raw pigments to the cracking of the egg. It is always a pleasure to have Shawnigan alumni return to share their passions and skills with current students.
